Jess & Matt’s Wedding

The Dewberry, Charleston South Carolina

I was not prepared for the beauty that is Charleston, South Carolina.

Being from California, I had only heard faint rumors of its charm. When we moved to Tennessee and began acquainting ourselves with the wedding industry here, I quickly put Charleston on our bucket list for wedding locations. It was such a pleasant surprise to hear from Matt not long afterwards who was getting married in Charleston to his fiancé, Jess.

The closest thing I could relate Charleston to is Main Street in Disneyland - the colors, smells, the gas lit lamps, the enchantment. The nostalgia Disneyland is going for exists real life in Charleston. Fun fact: No building in Charleston can be built taller than their tallest church steeple, giving them the nickname “The Holy City.” I was happy to scout almost the entire city before the wedding to make sure we took full advantage of it all.

Matt and Jess got married at the Dewberry Hotel downtown, a recently renovated hotel modeled after the mid-century sets of Mad Men. The venue, both timeless and hip, appropriately matched Matt and Jess. Since they had to downsize their wedding due to Covid, they were able to enjoy more time with their guests and still had plenty of time for rad photo ops around the city. The wedding ended with a rooftop sunset cocktail hour and an intimate dinner.

Thank you, Matt and Jess, for having me photograph your gorgeous Charleston wedding and helping me cross off a bucket list gem. If your life together is a reflection of your wedding day, you’re off to the loveliest of starts.
